Students will be inspired to learn about human impacts on the environment and how they can act for wildlife.

Program description

This program encourages students to consider the human impact on wildlife. They will examine the interconnections between humans and their environment and the impacts this can have on animals. Students will learn what they can do to be more environmentally friendly and how they can act for wildlife.

Students will learn:

  • About the impact humans are having on the environment and how this affects animals
  • About structural features of animals that help them survive
  • How to adopt behaviours that make them a wildlife friendly Victorian

Connect 

Use the activities in the Teaching Guide (below) to spark students’ curiosity before their zoo visit. 

During your visit

Connect and Understand 

Students will discover the diversity and uniqueness of wildlife, as well as the threats animals face in the wild. Students will learn about some steps that Zoo’s Victoria are taking to help threatened animals and what they can do to contribute to protecting wildlife.

Your Park visit will include: an introduction to the day, Zoo Teacher workshop (30 minutes), and a self-guided walking trail. Check out your Teaching Guide for other ideas of what to do at the Park.

Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment (VCSSU074)

  • Students will have the opportunity to closely observe an animals structural features and adaptations, zoo educators can facilitate discussion about how these features help them to survive in their environment

The growth and survival of living things are affected by the physical conditions of their environment (VCSSU075)

  • Students will learn about what impact humans are having on different species’ environment and be challenged to become a more sustainable and wildlife friendly global citizen
Geography

Describe and explain interconnections within places and between places, and the effects of these interconnections (VCGGC087)

  • Through student led learning students will learn about what impacts humans are having on environments over time and how that can affect places and interconnections within those places

This program is an outdoor all-weather program; the students will need appropriate clothing for weather conditions. This could include a raincoat, hat and sun protection
